Musical Quotient : Your aptitude for Music

“Academic education might help us ‘earn a living’ whereas ART tells us WHY to live”. This makes MQ (Musical Quotient) equally important as IQ or EQ. Research says, kids are born with a particular level of MQ which can't be changed after age 10. We have designed this test to measure their MQ (Aptitude for Music). This test will help you understand where your kid, aged 5 to 15 yrs, stands w.r.t. MQ. After this test you will get a guideline on where your kid is good at and how you can improve his/her Musical Talent. If your kid gets more than 60%, he will also be awarded with a certificate. Should I send my kid to Music Class? This is the question faced by all parents. The answer to this is of course specific to each kid. It all depends on his or her ‘Aptitude for Music’. But can we find that out? It is not easy but we have found out one objective way to handle this. The way we find out IQ, EQ why not MQ? Musical Quotient!

Musical Quotient is a measure of the potential of the participant to learn music.

As per the research, kids are born with a particular level of Music Aptitude or Musical Quotient. This level changes with the quality of their music environment up to age ten. After age ten, on an average, kids level of music aptitude stabilizes and will not change for the rest of their lives, regardless of the quality of their music environment. Hence, it is very critical that kids receive the highest quality of informal music guidance and formal music instructions till age ten.

This test is to help parents/teachers understand kid’s performance and establish reasonable goals.

If your kid is above 10 years of age, this is an opportunity to find out whether he has liking for Music or not. Accordingly you can plan further.

What ‘Musical Aptitude’ exactly will be tested here?

1) Pitch (Sur) : Ability to identify high pitch/low pitch

2) Rhythm (Taal) : Ability to identify Tempo (Speed), Rhythm (Note Duration) and offbeat/onbeat

3) Sound Listening (Timbre/Texture/Dynamics) : Ability to identify musical instruments from subject sounds, ability to differentiate sounds

4) Behavioural : Traits of the Kid e.g. Inner Liking, Habits and Behaviours developed till now

The outcome of MQ Test :

To assist you in better understanding the individual musical strengths and weaknesses. As a result, you will be able to decide which area to focus on as well as where a teacher/parent should customize music education for the participant.

Please note that High score indicates his inclination but a low score does not necessarily indicate that s/he is not fit for music education.

Please use this test only for guidance because there are many factors which can affect the result e.g. the mood and interest of the student, environment etc.

Eligibility : 5 to 15 yr kids (under the guidance of parents)

Parents should answer all behavioural questions regarding the kid.
